balloon day LC2008
Sebastian Moody, artist-in-residence, conceived an activity for the morning of the third day of the workshop to provide some fun for participants, explore pedestrian movement from the Brunswick Street Mall to Kemp Place Park and foci with the park.
Two hundred and fifty helium-filled red ballons were provided and distributed to workshop participants in the courtyard at the Institute of Modern Art. From there, the students took the balloons to the Brunswick Street Mall where they handed them to members of the public with instructions to tie them outside their destination or as close to Kemp Place Park as possible. Very few ended up near the park, with most tied to furniture and posts outside of buildings along Brunswick Street and Ann Street.
Left-over ballons were taken to the park where the students tied them to small weighted bags and distributed them throughout the park as they saw fit. There was a proclivity to decorate trees, hoist them from the tall light pole to the west of the park or distribute them along the southern edge of the park adjacent to Kemp Place, adding liviliness and colour along the path within the park and defining the edge of the park as viewed by motorists using Kemp Place to access the Story Bridge.
